Ione is a city located in Amador County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,129. Once known as "Bed-Bug" and "Freeze Out," Ione was an important supply center on the main road to the Mother Lode and Southern Mines.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.4 km2 (4.8 mi2). 12.3 km2 (4.7 mi2) of it is land and 0.1 km2 (0.04 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.63% water.
Ione is the site of the Preston Youth Correctional Facility (formerly the Preston School of Industry), a well-known reform school.
As of the census of 2000, there are 7,129 people, 1,081 households, and 780 families residing in the city. The population density is 580.7/km2 (1,502.6/mi2). There are 1,155 housing units at an average density of 94.1/km2 (243.4/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 57.90% White, 17.83% Black or African American, 2.30% Native American, 1.68% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 18.12% from other races, and 1.99% from two or more races. 20.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,081 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.14.
